Beesworks Youth Leadership for SCHC 2017

Over 4 weeks this summer I spoke with youth about leadership and the primacy- before attempting to lead others - of being a leader in one's own life. We discussed the striving ambition and "power over" governance style of many modern leaders and conversely, what it means to cultivate personal power and "power with". We envisionned being grounded in the present moment and freeing ourselves from the fear of social judgement by focusing on our innate value -a value can neither be ascribed to us nor taken away. The age range of our participants was between 12 and 17. Most adults I know did not begin this kind of reflective self-awareness and self-care work until their mid-30s and 40s. When I facilitate workshops with older adults who have lived a lifetime of being outwardly focused, making time now to explore their thoughts, feelings or creativity is a considerable shift.
